Veteran's Day: Thank You For Your Sacrifice and Service!

usflag2 (37K)

A building will quickly become unusable if the building owner
does not invest time, money and effort to manage and maintain
it.

Today's post is in grateful recognition to those patriots that took an ownership role to maintain our "building of freedom". They invested their lives and futures into preserving the freedom we all enjoy.

A grateful note of thanks to,

Those that served;

Those that paid the ultimate price to maintain and preserve
freedom with their lives;

Those that are currently serving;

...and the families and friends that have been honored by
their service and ultimate sacrifices.

11th Month, 11th Day, 11th Hour, 11th Minute...

Veterans' Day honors all members of the Armed Forces who have given their lives in the line of duty. There is no greater sacrifice. It is important for us to remember what they did in service to our great country, the values we stand for and our way of life.

This holiday originally was called Armistice Day and was first celebrated in 1921. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed it to Veteran's Day in honor of those who served and died from all wars.

On November 11 at 11:11, 1921 the U.S. France and England each buried an unknown soldier in honor of those who died in World War I. This began the annual Armistice Day holiday. The time and day was picked because fighting ceased in WWI in 1918 on November 11 at 11:11.

As you enjoy another great weekend of freedom, reflect on those that have and are investing their lives to maintain our "building of freedom".

Our extended thanks for the previous service of these Taylor Technologies' staff members.

Building & Facility Owners Lifecycle Management Needs Define Digital Deliverables

So why are building owners redefining the deliverables for architects and engineers?

Let's look at some statistics that affect building owners:

We found one study that showed a building with $200 per sq ft construction costs, will cost the owner $40 per sq ft to manage and maintain.

Another study shows annual management and maintenance costs range from 4-10% of the original construction costs...depending on the quality designed into the building.

A typical $100m building project generates 150,000 separate documents: technical drawings, legal contracts, purchase orders, RFIs and schedules.

Lastly building owners are trying to minimize the waste that they inevitably pay for with the construction process we have in the U.S.

"...inefficiencies, mistakes and delays account for $200 billion of the $650 billion spent on construction in America every year."

They need to manage the lifecycle costs of their buildings after construction. They need a three-dimensional, digital model that accurately stores the original design of the building. As they revise the building's use, they need to analyze, simulate, save and track those changes in a digital format.

Paper drawings and CAD entities (lines, arcs, circles, dimensions) are not going provide the solution they need.

If you click on the title to this blog you will be able to download a whitepaper that I wrote on Building Information Modeling (BIM). CSI-Chicago and Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) published it in their respective magazines over the last year.
